Beschreibung
In the fable of "The Countryman and the Serpent," attributed to Aesop, a countryman encounters a serpent frozen by the cold and takes pity on it, reviving it with warmth. Grateful for the kindness, the serpent promises not to harm the countryman. However, once restored to health, the serpent bites the man, causing his death. As the countryman succumbs to the serpent's venom, he laments his fate, realizing too late the folly of trusting a creature known for its treachery. The moral of the story warns against misplaced trust and highlights the inherent nature of certain beings, suggesting that kindness to the untrustworthy may result in harm. This timeless lesson cautions against naivety and underscores the importance of discernment and wisdom in dealing with others. Artist: Gustave Dore . Print Size: 9 3/4 ins x 7 3/4 ins Overall Size: 14 1/2 x 11 ins. 1870 Wood Engraving after the painting of Gustave Dore. Paul Gustave Dore (1832-1883), famous French illustrator, engraver, painter, and sculptor. He is best known for his highly imaginative and dramatic illustrations. At first he did his own engraving on wood, but as his success grew, his later work was done in collaboration with numerous engravers. His lively illustrations for some 120 books, including Paradise Lost, the Divine Comedy (1861), Don Quixote (1862), the Bible (1866), Balzac's Droll Tales, the works of Rabelais, the Fables of La Fontaine, and other classics, are still admired. He particularly excelled in weird, fantastic scenes. Less popular today are his works in painting and sculpture. This quality engraving originates from an 1870 art publication with a collection of plates, giving some idea of the variety as well as the power of Dore's genius.
