1850s Steel Engraving - L' Alarm au Gete The Alarm - Wild und Wald TronogaArtist: Carl Ruthart - Enraved by: GrayFrom an old descriptive: On the bank of a sequestered forest stream, three deer are reposing apparently during the midday heats, while two herons are patiently watching for their prey on the margin of the water. Some slight cause of alarm, perhaps the distant bay of a hound or the shout of a hunter, seems to have disturbed the hitherto unbroken silence of the forest; the largest of the deer starts and looks with an eager and suspicious glance in the direction of the sound, while one of the herons rises on the wing to seek a still deeper solitude. An indescribable air of sylvan quiet and repose pervades the whole of this composition and only the action of the animals indicates that the great destroyer Man has ever disturbed with his presence this beautiful sanctuary of Nature. Carl Borromäus Andreas Ruthart's specialty was painting animals. He trained in Danzig, which is now Gdansk, Poland, and went to Rome in 1659. He spent some time in Antwerp, where he joined the painters' guild studied first-hand the works of Flemish animal painters such as Frans Snyders. Artists such as Wilhelm van Ehrenberg often called on Ruthart to add animals to their architectural or landscape scenes. His reputation lay not only in his understanding of animal anatomy and his skill at painting fur but his ability to integrate animals smoothly into a variety of settings, from mythological or biblical contexts to idyllic scenes. His work is characterized by restrained, cool colors with alternating light and shadow in the foreground.Between 1665 and 1667 Ruthart traveled to Vienna via Regensburg, Germany. In 1672 he went to Venice and then to Rome, where he saw the work of Giovanni Battista Castiglione. In Rome he entered the Celestine monastery and painted altarpieces for its church. Ruthart later moved to the monastery at L'Aquila, where he continued to paint.
