One of a series of seven prints commissioned from Scottish printmakers by the Cromarty Arts Trust, in co-operation with art.tm in Inverness (formerly the Highland Printmakers' Workshop, now the Highland Print Studio), to celebrate the bicentenary of Hugh Miller (1802-1856), the Cromarty stonemason who became one of the great writers of the Scottish nineteenth century. Writing in The Old Red Sandstone (1841) about Eathie, his beloved fossil hunting-ground on the Black Isle's south coast, Miller can't resist a digression on its reputation as "a favourite haunt of the fairies - the most poetical of all our old tribes of spectres, and at one time one of the most popular. I have conversed with an old woman who, when a very little girl, had seen myriads of them dancing, as the sun was setting, on the further edge of the dell; and with a still older man, who had the temerity to offer one of them a pinch of snuff at the foot of the cascade . . . The fairies have deserted the Burn of Eathie" - and indeed, as Miller tells the story, when they deserted it they left Scotland for ever. A "herd-boy and a little girl, his sister" saw their motley and "dwarfish" procession depart. "What are ye, little mannie? and where are ye going?" the boy asked the last of them. "'Not of the race of Adam,' said the creature, turning for a moment in his saddle; 'the People of Peace shall never more be seen in Scotland.'" Ashley Cook (1964-), an alumna of Glasgow School of Art, lives in Glasgow and her prints are on the roster of Glasgow Print Studio.
