The mighty stronghold of Carrickfergus, once the centre of Anglo-Norman power in Ulster, is a remarkably complete and well-preserved early medieval castle that has survived intact despite 750 years of continuous military occupation.Glenarm claims to be the oldest town in Ulster having been granted a charter in the 12th Century.Garron Tower was built in the mid-nineteenth century by the Marchioness of Londonderry, Frances Anne-Vane, as a summer retreat from the bustle of high society. She was one of the leading aristocrats of Victorian England, who in 1834 inherited part of her mother's estate in Carnlough, Co. Antrim. The castle was designed by the architect Lewis Vulliamy in the form of a gothic pseudo-castle, based upon the design of Burg Rheinstein (13th century castle on the Rhine).
