Beschreibung
In the biblical account recorded in Genesis, the narrative of Jacob going into Egypt marks a significant turning point in the story of the Israelites. After a long period of separation from his favored son Joseph, whom he believed to be dead, Jacob receives news that Joseph is alive and holds a position of authority in Egypt. Faced with a severe famine in Canaan, Jacob and his entire family journey to Egypt to seek food and refuge. This decision symbolizes both desperation and hope as they embark on a journey into the unknown. Upon their arrival in Egypt, Jacob is reunited with Joseph, and Pharaoh extends hospitality to him and his family, granting them land in the fertile region of Goshen. The migration of Jacob and his family into Egypt fulfills God's promise to Abraham of making his descendants into a great nation and sets the stage for the fulfillment of God's covenant with the Israelites. Additionally, it foreshadows the eventual enslavement and Exodus of the Israelites from Egypt, highlighting the complex interplay of divine providence and human agency in the unfolding of salvation history. Artist: Gustave Dore . Print Size: 9 3/4 ins x 7 3/4 ins Overall Size: 14 1/2 x 11 ins. 1870 Wood Engraving after the painting of Gustave Dore. Paul Gustave Dore (1832-1883), famous French illustrator, engraver, painter, and sculptor. He is best known for his highly imaginative and dramatic illustrations. At first he did his own engraving on wood, but as his success grew, his later work was done in collaboration with numerous engravers. His lively illustrations for some 120 books, including Paradise Lost, the Divine Comedy (1861), Don Quixote (1862), the Bible (1866), Balzac's Droll Tales, the works of Rabelais, the Fables of La Fontaine, and other classics, are still admired. He particularly excelled in weird, fantastic scenes. Less popular today are his works in painting and sculpture. This quality engraving originates from an 1870 art publication with a collection of plates, giving some idea of the variety as well as the power of Dore's genius.
