Beschreibung
The print from "Pilgrim's Progress and other works by John Bunyan," published circa 1870 by James Sangster, depicts the biblical scene known as "The Triumphal Entry," where Jesus Christ enters Jerusalem riding on a donkey, an event celebrated on Palm Sunday. The image is framed within an arched border, focusing on the central figure of Jesus, who is dressed in a blue robe and red cloak, seated on the donkey. Surrounding Jesus are his disciples and a crowd of followers, some of whom are laying down palm branches and cloaks on the path before him, symbolizing their reverence and recognition of his messianic role. The expressions on the faces of the crowd vary from awe to curiosity, capturing the mixed emotions of the moment. The scene is set against a simple landscape, allowing the figures to stand out prominently. This illustration encapsulates the themes of humility, triumph, and the fulfillment of prophecy, which are central to Bunyan's allegorical works and Christian theology. The process was based on lithography printing on stone, but extended so that a separate stone, each with its own color, was laid on top of the previous one. Thus, the paper sheet was printed on several times before the print was finished. This required both a number of stones and a very precise method for laying the stones.
