The chromolithograph illustration titled "Consider the Lilies" is a serene and contemplative scene from John Bunyan's "Pilgrim's Progress," created by James Sangster around 1870. This illustration captures a moment of spiritual reflection and natural beauty, aligning with the themes of faith and simplicity found in Bunyan's allegorical work. The central figure, likely representing Christ or a divine figure, stands amidst a tranquil woodland setting, dressed in flowing robes of red and blue, with a gentle, instructive gesture directed towards the lilies growing at his feet. A child, seated on the ground, gazes up in attentive reverence, while another figure, possibly a young woman, kneels nearby, also focused on the lilies. The scene is framed by lush trees and vibrant foliage, emphasizing the harmony between nature and spiritual teachings. The phrase "Consider the Lilies" at the bottom of the illustration references the biblical passage from Matthew 6:28-29, where Jesus uses the lilies of the field as an example of God's providential care. The imprint "Leighton Bros." indicates the publishers, known for their high-quality lithographic prints during the late 19th century. This illustration not only reflects the artistic skill of James Sangster but also encapsulates the spiritual and moral lessons embedded in Bunyan's narrative. The process was based on lithography printing on stone, but extended so that a separate stone, each with its own color, was laid on top of the previous one. Thus, the paper sheet was printed on several times before the print was finished. This required both a number of stones and a very precise method for laying the stones.
