The Chromolithograph Illustration from "Pilgrim's Progress and other works by John Bunyan" (James Sangster, c 1870) portrays "Lord Hate-Good," a character embodying opposition to virtue and goodness in Bunyan's allegorical narrative. The process was based on lithography printing on stone, but extended so that a separate stone, each with its own color, was laid on top of the previous one. Thus, the paper sheet was printed on several times before the print was finished. This required both a number of stones and a very precise method for laying the stones.
