Beschreibung
The Chromolithograph Illustration from "Pilgrim's Progress and other works by John Bunyan" (James Sangster, c 1870) portrays "Lord Hate-Good," a character embodying opposition to virtue and goodness in Bunyan's allegorical narrative. The illustration depicts an older man with a stern expression, dressed in elaborate, dark robes adorned with white ermine trim, signifying his status and authority. He holds a scroll, possibly symbolizing legal or moral decrees, reinforcing his character's antagonistic role. The phrase "Lord Hate-Good" is inscribed at the bottom center of the print, clearly identifying the character. The imprint "Leighton Bros." at the bottom right indicates the lithographers responsible for the print. This piece is part of a series of illustrations accompanying Bunyan's works, which were renowned for their religious and moral teachings. The Chromolithograph technique, utilizing multiple lithographic stones to achieve a full-color image, was an advanced printing method in the late 19th century, enabling rich and detailed reproductions of artwork. The process was based on lithography printing on stone, but extended so that a separate stone, each with its own color, was laid on top of the previous one. Thus, the paper sheet was printed on several times before the print was finished. This required both a number of stones and a very precise method for laying the stones.
