The story of Lazarus at the rich man's house, as recounted in the New Testament of the Bible, specifically in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 16:19-31), offers a profound moral lesson about compassion and the consequences of neglecting the needy. In this narrative, Jesus tells of a wealthy man who lived a life of luxury, feasting sumptuously every day, while a poor beggar named Lazarus lay at his gate, covered in sores and longing for even the crumbs that fell from the rich man's table. Despite their starkly contrasting circumstances, the rich man ignored Lazarus's suffering and failed to offer him any assistance. However, after both men died, their fates were reversed: Lazarus was carried by angels to Abraham's side in paradise, while the rich man found himself in torment in Hades. In his anguish, the rich man begged Abraham to send Lazarus to warn his brothers about the consequences of their ways. Yet, Abraham explained that they had Moses and the prophets to guide them, and if they did not listen to them, they would not be convinced even if someone were to rise from the dead. This parable highlights the importance of compassion, generosity, and social responsibility, reminding us of our duty to care for those in need and to heed the teachings of scripture in order to avoid spiritual ruin. Paul Gustave Dore (1832-1883), famous French illustrator, engraver, painter, and sculptor. He is best known for his highly imaginative and dramatic illustrations. At first he did his own engraving on wood, but as his success grew, his later work was done in collaboration with numerous engravers. His lively illustrations for some 120 books, including Paradise Lost, the Divine Comedy (1861), Don Quixote (1862), the Bible (1866), Balzac's Droll Tales, the works of Rabelais, the Fables of La Fontaine, and other classics, are still admired. He particularly excelled in weird, fantastic scenes. Less popular today are his works in painting and sculpture. This quality engraving originates from an 1870 art publication with a collection of plates, giving some idea of the variety as well as the power of Dore's genius.
