Original etching by Max Liebermann. 27 x 22 cm, in fine condition. Max Liebermann (born July 20 , 1847 in Berlin ; died there on February 8 , 1935 ) was a German painter and graphic artist . He is one of the most important representatives of German Impressionism . After training in Weimar and stays in Paris and the Netherlands, he initially created naturalistic works with social themes. Through his involvement with the French Impressionists since 1880, he discovered the light colors and dynamic application of paint that characterize his main work. His work symbolizes the transition from 19th century art to classical modernism at the time of Wilhelminism and the Weimar Republic . He promoted this change as president of the Berlin Secession . From 1920 to 1932 he was president, then honorary president, of the Prussian Academy of Arts . As a representative of the Republic and a Jew, he left the academy in 1933 in view of the National Socialists ' policy of conformity .
