Beschreibung
The parable of the Pharisee and the Publican, found in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 18:9-14), offers a profound lesson on humility and righteousness before God. In this story, Jesus contrasts the attitudes of two individuals who come to pray in the temple. The Pharisee, known for his strict observance of religious laws, proudly boasts of his own righteousness, thanking God that he is not like other people, including the sinful tax collector standing nearby. In contrast, the tax collector, aware of his own unworthiness, humbly beats his chest and pleads for God's mercy, acknowledging his need for forgiveness. Jesus concludes the parable by stating that it was the tax collector, not the Pharisee, who went home justified before God. This parable underscores the importance of humility and sincerity in our relationship with God, emphasizing that true righteousness is not found in self-righteousness or comparing oneself favorably to others, but in acknowledging our own shortcomings and relying on God's grace and mercy for salvation. Artist: Gustave Dore . Print Size: 9 3/4 ins x 7 3/4 ins Overall Size: 14 1/2 x 11 ins. 1870 Wood Engraving after the painting of Gustave Dore. Paul Gustave Dore (1832-1883), famous French illustrator, engraver, painter, and sculptor. He is best known for his highly imaginative and dramatic illustrations. At first he did his own engraving on wood, but as his success grew, his later work was done in collaboration with numerous engravers. His lively illustrations for some 120 books, including Paradise Lost, the Divine Comedy (1861), Don Quixote (1862), the Bible (1866), Balzac's Droll Tales, the works of Rabelais, the Fables of La Fontaine, and other classics, are still admired. He particularly excelled in weird, fantastic scenes. Less popular today are his works in painting and sculpture. This quality engraving originates from an 1870 art publication with a collection of plates, giving some idea of the variety as well as the power of Dore's genius.
