This beautiful botanical print comes from Louis Van Houtte's monumental work entitled Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe (Flowers of the Greenhouses and Gardens of Europe) published between 1845 and 1883. Van Houtte was considered one of the premier horticulturists of his day and served as the chief editor for this work in coordination with prominent botanist Charles Lemaire.Van Houtte owned many nurseries and greenhouses where many of the plants and flowers depicted in Flore des Serres were actually cultivated. These plates in essence acted as his catalogue, and thus feature what were the most desirable botanicals of the time. Orchids, roses, camellias, carnivorous plants, and tropical or exotic flowers were particularly shown in the work. --- The work is in very good to excellent condition overall. There may be a few minor marks to be expected with age. Please review the image carefully for condition and contact us with any questions. --- Paper Size ~ 12 5/8" by 10" (Fold Out). Sehr schöne original Farblithographie von ca. 1850. Mit dazugehörigem Textblatt. Aus Van Houtte's bedeutender Blumen-Zeitschrift "Flore des Serres" -- Blatt-Maße ca. 33 x 25 cm -- gut erhalten. || Magnificent color lithograph from c. 1850. With accompanying text page. -- Out of Louis Benoit van Houtte's work "Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l'Europe", published between 1845 and 1883. -- in good condition. || Louis Benoît van Houtte (1810-1876) was a renowned Belgian horticulturist. Upon returning from an expedition to Brazil, he founded the Ecole d'Horticulture in his hometown Gent. Around the same time, together with French botanist Charles Lemaire, he started publishing the horticultural journal Flore des serres et des Jardins de l'Europe. One of the first horticulture works published in Europe in the 19th century, this work showcased over 2000 splendid hand-finished engravings and lithographs that illustrate and describe various botanical species from all around the globe. The craftsmanship of Belgian lithographers such as De Pannemaker or Louis-Constantin Stroobant is evident in the impressive and beautifully colored prints that illustrated the work across a period of almost 40 years. The volumes comprise numerous species of flowers, including rare, exotic or tropical ones. Most of them were available in Van Houtte?s own nursery, founded in Gent, which soon became the largest and most flourishing one in Europe. Van Houtte?s Journal thus doubles as a catalogue of the botanical species in his nursery. This is an original! No copy! - No reprint! -- In very good condition!
