Hardback. 8 x 5.5 inches. In dark green/black full morocco leather binding with raised banding gilt decoration and lettering to spine and gilt decorations to front and rear covers. Decorative gilt edging to boards and inner edges. All page edges gilt. Yellow endpapers. In very good condition. Some rubbing to edges and corners. Small chip to top leading corner. Small patch to front endpaper from removed bookplate. Tight glue repairs between endpapers. Neat inscription to prelim ?Maria Casley, 1835.? Some minor foxing to title page, some heavy foxing to first few pages, some mild foxing to pages throughout. a very good clean and tight copy. 295pp. With many b&w steel engraved vignette illustrations, printed within text, all with tissue guards. Although celebrated for his verse in his lifetime, today he is remembered more for his influence and help given to other writers. Rogers kept a notebook in which he entered impressions of the conversation of many of his distinguished friends?Fox, Edmund Burke, Henry Grattan, Richard Porson, John Horne Tooke, Talleyrand, Lord Erskine, Scott, Lord Grenville and the Duke of Wellington. They were published by his nephew William Sharpe in 1859 as Recollections by Samuel Rogers; Reminiscences and Table-Talk of Samuel Rogers, Banker, Poet, and Patron of the Arts, 1763?1855 (1903), by GH Powell, is an amalgamation of these two authorities. Rogers held various honorary positions: he was one of the trustees of the National Gallery; and he served on a commission to inquire into the management of the British Museum, and on another for the rebuilding of the Houses of Parliament.
