A very fine 20th century pastel circa 1910 0f MERCEDES OLLER ALEMAN SABADELL in a sumptuous antique gold frame. The painting is signed by M.Oller (Maria Oller) the daughter of NARCIS OLLER Y MORAGAS, the famous Catalan writer. Maria was a highly competent and renowned Barcelona portrait painter de la jour. The subject of the painting is Mercedes Oller, an elegant socialite, a member of the elitist and wealthy Oller family. In the painting we see Mercedes in a white, gauzy evening dress with diamonds in her hair, a fur draped elegantly over her shoulders, perhaps leaving to attend an intimate dinner in the city of Barcelona. This is an important piece of social history as to how the upper classes lived at the turn of the last century in Catalunya, Spain. The rich and famous Oller family, comprised largely of doctors, surgeons, painters and writers, lived in imposing, luxurious mansions in Barcelona. They could often be found presiding over intimate high society suppers, served by their many servants, where French was spoken at the table. The painting has recently been restored and this charming pastel is in excellent condition. Museum quality antique piece.
