Antique drawing, untitled. View on Castle Batenburg, a formerly important castle in the town of Batenburg near Wijchen, Gelderland, the Netherlands. The castle was owned by the Bronkhorst family, and later by the counts of Bentheim and Steinfurt. The castle was destroyed by the French army in 1794. Ruins remain. Washed ink on wove paper. Description: With a handwritten dedicatory note: 'Offert a son Altesse le Prince de Steinfurt-Bentheim par le general major d'artillerie Le Clerq.' (Offered to the Prince of Steinfurt-Bentheim by General major of the artillery Le Clerq.) General Johannes Anthonie Le Clerq (1807-1880) was an officer in the army of Prince Frederik of Nassau.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Anonymous' after 'J. v. Strij and others'. We have been unable to find more about this artist. Any input is welcome. Condition: Good, given age. Drawing attached to carrier sheet. Left edge stained.
