Antique Master Print, titled: 'De Vrijheid-verkrijging der Protestentsche godsdienst, in de Nederlanden. (Title lacking on this rare proof impression.)' - (The gaining of Protestant religious freedom in the Low Countries.) This is an large allegory of this event in 1517 in present day Belgium and the Netherlands. Rare Proof impression. Detailed description: Prince Willem I, holding a lance and freedom hat is standing next to the personification of religion in front of a monument erected for the fight for freedom of Religion. The monument depicts the Counts of Egmont and Horne standing on a shield covering the Duke of Parma. They are flanked by death and Hercules. Sunrays appear from behind disappearing clouds. Behind the Price the flag and ships of the Geuzen. On the right forground razing soldiers, a mother with children, a soldier killing a Catholic priest (possibly referring to the Martyrs of Gorkum). Centrally a fleeing Popal figure. On the left foreground cavalry, with one pointing his pistol at the Prince. More cavalry in the background left is holding a flag Burgundian Cross. In the left bottom corner a burned victim of religious persecution or Spanish Inquisition. Etching and stipple engraving on hand laid paper. Description: Published by Johannes Groenewoud Janszn. According to Muller published in 1817 during the 3rd centennial of the Church reform (1517), but sources also mention the possibillity of it's publication in 1827 during the 250 year celebration of the Union of Brussels (1577). Bemme (1775-1841) was a Dutch designer and etcher active in Rotterdam. He was also active in the very early years of the lithography. He was a student of his father, Hauck and D. Langendijk. C. Moeyjer = C. Meyer. Condition: Good, given age. Image very nice. Tears in lower right corner, several small tears and creases in margins. Light soiling of margins.This print is in good shape given it's size and vulnerability. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.
