Antique print, titled: 'La Bataille de Jena, ou la Mort du Duc de Brunswick.' - Large spectacular view of the Battle of Jena, or the Death of the Duke of Brunswick. The twin battles of Jena and Auerstedt were fought on 14 October 1806 on the plateau west of the river Saale in today's Germany, between the forces of Napoleon I of France and Frederick William III of Prussia. The decisive defeat suffered by the Prussian Army subjugated the Kingdom of Prussia to the French Empire until the Sixth Coalition was formed in 1812. Description: Source unknown, to be determined. Ref: Le Blanc 5.Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Johannes Josephus Wolff' after 'Carle Vernet'. Johannes Josephus Wolff (1779-1830) was a Dutch stipple engraver and etcher from and active in Rotterdam. He also made several trips abroad. Carle Vernet (1758-1835) was a French painter, the youngest child of Claude Joseph Vernet, and the father of Horace Vernet. Born in Bordeaux, Vernet was a pupil of his father and of Nicolas-Bernard Lepicie. Strangely, after winning the grand prix (1782), his father had to recall him back from Rome to France to prevent him from entering a monastery. Etching and stipple engraving on hand laid paper. Anonymous. Very good, given age. Light surface paper damage, particularly in top right part of print. Pinhole and rust stain in top margin. Small tears in right and left margin, backed by contemporary paper and consolidated with acid free tape. Some paper erosion on rear from previous attachment General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. The overall size is ca. 40.8 x 51.3 cm.
