Plate 67.: 'Fort Nassau van binnen met Oranje op 't Eilant Goeree. - Le dedans du Fort de Nassau dans l'Ile de Goeree en Nigritie.' (Fort Nassau from within and Fort Oranje on Goree Island.) This plate shows the Dutch Forts Nassau and Oranje on the coast off the city of Dakar, Senegal. Depicted are cannons, slodiers, ammunition etc. In the background are ships. Goree is famous as a destination for people interested in the Atlantic slave trade but relatively few slaves were processed or transported from there. Extremely rare in this edition. Copperplate engraving on a verge type hand laid paper with watermark. Original folds. Authenticity 100% guaranteed. Description: This plate originates from the very scarse: 'La galerie agreable du monde (.). Tome Troisieme d'Afrique.', published by P. van der Aa, Leyden, c. 1725. This famous work was published in 66 parts and is the biggest print / map book ever published. Van der Aa incorporated plates by other publishers such as Blaeu, Visscher, de Wit, meurs, Halma, Mortier, Allard in this work and often added broad decorative borders.
