Original crayon lithograph on a vellin type paper Description: This scarse print originates from: 'Naturgeschichte und Abbildungen des Menschen der verschiedenen Rassen und Stamme nach den neuesten Entdeckungen und vorzuglichsten Originalien.', by Heinrich Rudolf Schinz, published in Basel by Honeggerschen Lithographischen Anstalt, 1836-45. This work contains 55 ethnographic plates of all the continents. It is especially well known for the plates of American Indians after Karl Bodmer that were published as part of this work even before the publication of the famous aquatints in 1839. Rare and nice examples of early lithography.Artists and Engravers: The author Heinrich Rudolf Schinz (1777-1861) was a Swiss physician and naturalist. Schinz was born at Zurich and studied medicine at Würzburg and Jena, returning to Zurich in 1798 to practice. In 1804 he became a teacher at the medical institute, and in 1833 he became extraordinary professor of natural history at the university of Zurich. The lithographer of the plates is J.
