Concentrating his forces at Ramdam the Commander-in-Chief prepared in secret those plans that were to lay Cronje by the heels and to bring relief to Kimberley and Ladysmith. North of the British lay the Boer army under a leader who had shown himself not only skilful and daring but unscrupulous. Determined that he should not escape, Lord Robert, by a series of forced marches seized the drifts across the Mooder and Riet rivers, and Cronje found that the net was being drawn around him. Still he did not lose hope of establishing his communications with Bloemfontein. Collecting his men, the tenacious old warrior swept through the gap between French's cavalry and the infantry at Klip Drift and made a dash for the river. Hard upon his heels followed Lord Kitchener's mounted infantry, whose hopes of bringing the Boers to bay were encouraged by the sight of the transport train with which the enemy encumbered their march. One hope remained and Cronje was not the man to let it slip. He might even yet cross at Koodoosberg. But here again General French displayed that energy and foresight which have established his reputation as a cavalry leader. Without waiting to pursue the besiegers of Kimberley, French made a dash for Koodoosberg and seized the drift at the very moment when Cronje, having abandoned his wagons, appeared on the scene. The dark and direful Boer was now at bay. Hemmed in on every side he had no choice but to surrender or to cut his way through. The desperate alternative did not commend itself to the caution of the enemy, and Cronje taking up a strong position in the river bed made preparations to defend himself, while De Wet strove to create a diversion in his favour. For days the Boers held out despite a heavy artillery fire and many privations. But the end was near. Lord Kitchener ordered an attack upon the lines and many men were sacrificed. The advent of Lord Roberts led to a change of tactics, and while the cordon was being drawn tighter every day orders were given for a night attack. The Canadians advanced in the darkness, the rear rank carrying spades and rifles. Behind them came a company of engineers with spades and empty sand bags. Silently they crept up to within a few hundred paces from the dark trenches before a shot was fired. Throwing themselves on the ground the Canadians lay untouched by the fusilade. Captain Stairs and ten men hid themselves in a crevice of the river bank overlooking the enemies' laager, and with the aid of the sappers the party entrenched itself before dawn. When day broke the Boers found their position enfiladed at close quarters and Cronje surrendered. Henry Louis Dupray 1841-1909.
