Beschreibung
"Tircis and Amarant" is a pastoral romance written by Honor? d'Urf?, a French author of the 17th century. Set amidst the idyllic landscapes of Forez, the narrative follows the love story between Tircis and Amarant, two young shepherds whose affection for each other blossoms amidst the beauty of nature. Despite facing various obstacles and trials, including the disapproval of their families and the interference of rivals, Tircis and Amarant remain devoted to each other, their love enduring through hardship and adversity. The tale is renowned for its lyrical descriptions of the countryside, its exploration of themes such as love, honor, and fidelity, and its portrayal of an idealized pastoral world where the purity of love triumphs over social constraints. "Tircis and Amarant" remains a celebrated work of French literature, embodying the spirit of romance and the timeless allure of love in its purest form. Artist: Gustave Dore . Print Size: 9 3/4 ins x 7 3/4 ins Overall Size: 14 1/2 x 11 ins. 1870 Wood Engraving after the painting of Gustave Dore. Paul Gustave Dore (1832-1883), famous French illustrator, engraver, painter, and sculptor. He is best known for his highly imaginative and dramatic illustrations. At first he did his own engraving on wood, but as his success grew, his later work was done in collaboration with numerous engravers. His lively illustrations for some 120 books, including Paradise Lost, the Divine Comedy (1861), Don Quixote (1862), the Bible (1866), Balzac's Droll Tales, the works of Rabelais, the Fables of La Fontaine, and other classics, are still admired. He particularly excelled in weird, fantastic scenes. Less popular today are his works in painting and sculpture. This quality engraving originates from an 1870 art publication with a collection of plates, giving some idea of the variety as well as the power of Dore's genius.
