It is since and always the principal church of Dominican, rivals of the Jesuits in the defense of catholic orthodoxy against the Reform. This church contains many works of art (tables, frescos, monuments). This church stands in a little square, dominated by Bernini's charming elephant with an obelisk on his back. The church's name derives from the temple of Minerva on which it stands. The finest works of art are the statue of the Risen Christ by Michelangelo in the left aisle and the beautiful frescoes painted by Filippino Lippi in 1488-92 of the Life of St Thomas of Aquinas in the right transept. It was in the monastery behind the church that Galileo, was forced to recant his theory that the earth moved round the sun. This 13th century Gothic church contains an abundant amount of art and sculpture of Michelangelo, Bernini, and Filippino Lippi. The first church was built at the end of the 3rd or in the first half of the 4th century. It was built on the ruins of a Roman temple, probably dedicated to Minerva Chalcidia. The present church dates to c. 1280, and became an important church for the Dominicans. The architects were probably Fra Sisto and Fra Ristoro of Arezzo, and the work was ordered by Pope Nicholas III. In the 17th century, Carlo Maderno renovated the church. It has been renovated several times, with the last major work done in the 19th century by Fra Girolamo Bianchedi. This exquisite Architecture Print shows a remarkable drawing of Tuscan Renaissance Architecture.
