Beschreibung
1933. Woodcut on paper, framed. Signature in lower right corner. The wood cut measures 18 x 26 cm. Fine condition. The work depicts two men, probably Tzedeks, walking through a village in conversation. Steinhardt completed the work in the year of his emigration to Palestine. As such, it can be read as a comment on the predicament and resilience of the Jewish people at the time. Jakob Steinhardt (1887-1968) was a German-born Israeli artist. As a painter and woodcut artist, he is largely known for his depictions of Jewish subjects and biblical scenes. Born in Zerkow (now Poland), he and his family fled to Palestine in 1933 following Nazi persecution. Steinhardt served as the director of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design from 1954-1957. He died in 1968 and is buried in Nahariya, Israel. Today, Steinhardt's works can be found in the collections of notable museums around the world, including the Jewish Museums of Berlin and Frankfurt. Provenance: Acquired by Sheila Rabinovitch. Rabinovitch (1914 - 2012) was a freelance broadcaster and art consultant. She collected the works of mainly Canadian artists, including Jack Shadbolt, Toni Onley, Harold Town, and Takao Tanabe. She conducted interviews with each artist, as well as other intellectuals of the time, including Susan Sontag and Clement Greenberg. Her daughter, Celia (a professor, artist, and author), inherited the Steinhardt works in 2012. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 009949
