As follows: CARR, Philip (issue 1) then SIEVEKING, Paul-Rene (eds.). 'Origo' 1-3 (all published). Cambridge, 1968-[1970]. 1st editions. Issues 1 and 2 4to, stab-stapled wrappers, the latter with a label affixed, issue 3 narrow folio, stapled wrappers. 24pp.-30pp. A somewhat obscure little magazine with contributors including Graham Swift, Nigel Wheale, Julian Nangle, Bruton Connors, and the editors, the final issue notable however for the cover and six illustrations by Gormley. Both he and Sieveking studied Archaeology and Anthropology at Cambridge, and it was not until the early 1980s that Gormley's career as an artist began. As a result, the pieces here are unrecognisable from the work for which he is famous, though they are striking in their own way. Gormley is not the issue's only illustrator, but in correspondence with this cataloguer Sieveking has credited the art on pp.6, 8, 12/13, 15, 17, and 18 as being by him. Furthermore, included with this sale is the piece (consisting of eight panels) which is reproduced on p.6 (ink on card, 33.6 x 12cm), unsigned but attributed to Gormley in Sieveking's hand on the reverse, giving the date as 1969 (written at the time). Sieveking has also signed the two issues he edited, having signed the final issue also at the time, with a July 1970 date, which might suggest that the next item in this collection represents an even earlier publication by Gormley. BRITTEN, Simon, GORMLEY, Antony, JOHNSON, Gordon, KEMP, David, MOLONY, John, and WARREN, Stuart (editorial body). 'Trinity Review' Lent Term 1970. Cambridge, 1970. 1st edition. 4to. Stapled wrappers. 40pp. A magazine from Gormley's college and therefore perhaps rarer still. He is credited with its design and drawings which, as with 'Origo' 3, are not always individually attributed (and they are not all by him), but Sieveking identifies the wraparound cover and pp.1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 21, 22, 23, 24 (x2), 25, 26 (x2), and 27, maybe also 15, 29, 35 (x3), 36 (x3), and 37 (x3) as being his. (The cover gives as an alternative overall title 'The Trinity Thing'.) Future research will firm up these details, but in any case Gormley's profuse involvement is clear. Very Good with moderate wear to 'Origo', its wrappers occasionally a little nicked, those of issue 3 bright, with just minor peripheral discolouration and a small number of mild indentations to the front, 'Trinity Review' marked to parts of the covers and with some marginal soiling internally, neither having too much impact. The card of the original artwork is quite crudely cut and is somewhat rough on the reverse (where there are the remains of a sketch for p.17) but, except for light superficial rubbing or smudging, and a touch of mild edgewear, the piece itself is well preserved. The collection is accompanied by a signed letter of provenance from Sieveking, founding co-editor of 'Fortean Times'. Elsewhere he notes that Gormley also did drawings for a feature on psychedelics 'in a magazine that proofreading forgot' (called 'Period'), published by Sieveking and John Fullerton in 1970, and he confirms that the Tony Wilson thanked in 'Origo' 2 was the future founder of The Hacienda.
