The viaduct on the Baltimore and Washington Railroad, also known as the Thomas Viaduct, is a historic bridge located in Maryland. It was part of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, one of the oldest railroads in the United States. Construction of the viaduct began on July 4, 1828, as part of the Washington Branch of the railroad .The Thomas Viaduct spans the Patapsco River in Elkridge, Howard County, Maryland. It was designed by Benjamin Latrobe, John McCartney, Caspar Wever, and Philip E. Thomas. The viaduct is made of stone masonry and was completed in 1835. It is considered one of the world's oldest railroad bridges still in use for rail traffic. The Thomas Viaduct is a significant engineering landmark and has been recognized for its historical importance. It was designated a National Historic Landmark on November 11, 1971, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places on the same day. In 1982, it was also designated a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers .The viaduct played a crucial role in the transportation of goods and passengers on the Baltimore and Washington Railroad. It provided a sturdy and lasting structure for locomotives and carriages to safely cross the Patapsco River Valley.
