1773 COPPER ENGRAVING RARE ANTIQUE BOOKPLATE PRINT . The nunnery was founded by the twelfth-century noble woman, Evida, widow of Sir William Launceline of Winchester. It once boasted a magnificent church, courts, cloisters and a chapter house. Godstow nunnery is located on the Thames just north of Oxford. It's where Rosamund the Fair, Henry II's mistress, was buried after, so the story goes, Henry's wife poisoned her. It's also where Charles Dodgson was rowing to with Alice Liddell and her sisters when he first told them the story of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. It's been in ruins since the 17th Century.
