Medium: Watercolor An original watercolor and gouache painting by Kansas and Texas artist Vera Wise measuring approximately 19 1/2 x 24 3/8 visible inches behind glass in a frame measuring approximately 28 x 33 inches. Thanks for looking. Watercolor landscape painter Vera Wise was born July 26, 1892, in Iola, Kansas, growing up in southeastern Kansas and the Pacific Northwest. Her work was exhibited at many of the annual Dallas Museum of Fine Arts Texas Exhibitions of Painting and Sculpture. In 1920, she received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Willamette University, Salem, Oregon. From 1924-1925, she studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. Wise studied with Regionalist painter Thomas Hart Benton in 1931, and again in 1938-1939, at the Kansas City Art Institute. In 1940, she studied at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, with Thomas Craig as well as the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center. During the 1920s and the 1930s she worked at Montana high schools and Marshall Field and Company, Chicago. In1939 she accepted a position as the first chairman of the art department at the Texas College of Mines & Metallurgy (now University of Texas at El Paso) where she remained until her retirement in 1962.
