JAPAN. VIEW. Perry. 1856. ----TITLE: View of Hakodadi from Snow Peak. ----PUBLICATION DETAILS Lower right: Lith of Sarony & Co., New York. Lower left: From Nature by W Heine. 9 ½ w x 6 ½ h. Published in Matthew Calbraith Perry, Narrative of the Expedition of an American squadron to the China Seas and Japan: Performed in the years 1852, 1853, and 1854, under the Command of Commodore M.C. Perry, United States Navy. Washington, DC: Government of the United States, 1856. This is an original lithographic plate from the official report of the Commodore Perry Expedition. This is one of the historic plates from this now rare set, printed in black, with two "tint colors" used to add realism. The US expedition of 1853 forced Japan to re-open its borders to trade with the countries of the West. Two artists accompanied the expedition and recorded views in watercolor and daguerreotypes of places and people unseen by Westerners for centuries. ----SARONY: Napoleon Sarony (1821 1896) was an American lithographer and photographer. Sarony was born in Quebec in 1821 and moved to New York City around 1836. He worked as an illustrator for Currier and Ives before joining with James Major and starting his own lithography business, Sarony & Major, in 1843. From 1853 to 1857, the firm was known as Sarony and Company, as shown on this print. ----CONDITION: Small stain in upper margin. Image is very good. ----Z8P08A. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers Z8P08A
