img WILLIAM HOGARTHGENUINE ANTIQUE ENGRAVING TAKEN FROMHOGARTH RESTOREDRE-ENGRAVED BY THOMAS COOKPUBLISHED 1812 THE IDLE PRENTICE PLATE 5 " Idle sets out for a life at sea, probably paid for by his mother in the hope of him finding paid employment (she sits weeping in front of him). He is accompanied on the journey to an awaiting ship by two characters, who take delight in goading him. One points to the vessel, the other, with his hand on Idleâ s shoulder, holds a â cat-oâ -nine-tailsâ whip in his hand, a common form of punishment on board ship. The choppy waves and storm-filled skies portend the violence and insecurity of Idleâ s future." - TATE. Description/Condition: copperplate engraving measuring: Plate 37cm x 30cm approx. Sheet 56cm x 43cm approx. Inscribed: "Designed by Wm. Hogarth. Engraved by T. Cook. Published by T. Cook, Islington and G.G. & J. Robinsons Paternoster Row December 1st 1795." A strong, dark impression, occasional light spots of toning, toning to margin, printed on watermarked paper dated 1811 - please refer to images and examine carefully. William Hogarth was best known during his lifetime, as he is today, for his satirical engravings. They were in high demand throughout his career and were printed in even greater volume, first by Hogarthâ s wife and subsequently by several others, for many years following his death in 1764. By the 1790s, the plates had grown so worn that the sheets pulled from them offered only a ghost of the original image. One contemporary noted, â Some of the subjects which are still sanctioned with the name of Hogarth as the designer, are become flat, tame, and uninteresting and, instead of adorning the superb cabinets of taste and opulence, are hardly worthy of admission into the parlour of a common inn.â As a corrective, British printmaker Thomas Cook resolved to re-engrave Hogarthâ s entire oeuvre. In 1795, he announced a proposal for the â engraving, printing, and publishing by subscription, a complete edition of the works by that much admired artist William Hogarth,â under the heading Hogarth Restored - see Title Page above (not included in sale but will provide a photocopy). Please Note: This large engraving was taken from the above edition, in which all the engravings are the same size as Hogarth's originals, and should not be confused with prints taken from The Genuine Graphic Works of William Hogarth, also by Thomas Cook, which are not the same size as the Hogarth originals and are in fact very much smaller.A highly detailed engraving, perfectly suitable for framing. GUARANTEED OVER 200 YEARS OLD. NOT A MODERN REPRODUCTION. . 1110135. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 50360-1596
