Zachary Taylor, the 12th President of the United States, assumed office in March 1849 and served until his untimely death in July 1850. A career military officer and Major General in the U.S. Army, Taylor gained national fame during the Mexican-American War for his victories at the Battle of Palo Alto, Battle of Monterrey, and the decisive Battle of Buena Vista. His nickname, "Old Rough and Ready," reflected his approachable and unassuming demeanor. Taylor, a member of the Whig Party, had limited political experience prior to his presidency. His tenure was marked by debates over the extension of slavery into newly acquired territories from the Mexican-American War, and the California Gold Rush added to the complexity of the issue. Taylor's sudden death raised suspicions of foul play, but it was later attributed to a severe illness. His successor, Millard Fillmore, assumed the presidency, continuing the national discourse on the divisive issue of slavery.Published by Johnson Fry & Co. New York, 1868.
