Binding mostly strong, with a frontwards lean; a couple of gatherings slightly loose. Endpapers tanned. 330pp. + publisher's catalogue. Top edge of page block gilt. Two pencil crosses on rear pastedown. Contents clean. Loosely inserted is a newspaper clipping 'Discovering Pompeii' by Henry Reed, dated 14 March 1952, tanned. Edward George Earle Lytton Bulwer-Lytton, 1st Baron Lytton, PC (25 May 1803 18 January 1873) was an English writer and politician. Bulwer-Lytton's literary career began in 1820 with the publication of a book of poems and spanned much of the 19th century. He wrote in a variety of genres, including historical fiction, mystery, romance, the occult and science fiction. The Last Days of Pompeii is a novel written in 1834. The novel was inspired by the painting The Last Day of Pompeii by the Russian painter Karl Briullov, which Bulwer-Lytton had seen in Milan.
