Saddle-stitched pictorial newsprint self-wrappers printed in black with short splits at the spine ends, wrinkling to the back wrapper and minor spotting for what is still a very nice copy of this influential punk rock fanzine. [48] pp. Maximum Rocknroll (MRR) was founded in 1982 by Tim Yohannan, Jeff Bale, Ruth Schwartz, Jello Biafra, Mickey Creep, et al. as the newsprint booklet insert that was included in the Calipunk/Hardcore compilation double-LP, "Not So Quiet on the Western Front." The album had forty-seven tracks from forty-seven different bands, forty-six of which were from the Bay Area; pp. [2-48] of the booklet each feature one of the bands that appear on the album; each band's page is different, but most are photo illustrated, have a list of the members of the band and what instrument each member plays, and have the lyrics to the band's song on the album. MRR spawned a million bands and provided a pre-internet network for punk bands and individual punks. Although MRR was strongly tinged by the regional movement in Northern California, its scope was expansive, ultimately publishing reports from punk scenes across the globe, becoming as close to an institution as punk ideology would allow, and this booklet is where it all started.
