Beschreibung
pp. 1-12 (ads), 193-256 (text), 13-28 (ads). An original complete monthly issue of Scribner's Magazine, which includes the first appearance of this important Faulkner short story. The focus of the story is on two events: 1) the killing of "carpetbaggers" by Confederate Colonel John Sartoris to prevent the enfranchisement of former slaves; and 2) the marriage of Drusilla and Colonel Sartoris. The events are told from the perspective of the colonel's son, Bayard. The same events previously had been described from 2 different perspectives in the unpublished version of Flags in the Dust (1927) and Light in August (1932). An edited version of "Skirmish at Sartoris" was later included by Faulkner as the penultimate story in The Unvanquished (1938). For Faulkner, the events in the story were at the heart of the complex racial and gender relations that characterized the American South. This issue of Scribner's also includes articles by John Cowper Powys, Ida Tarbell and others. A scarce issue that is in very good condition: a bright copy with very minor soiling & wear. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers W1228
