Vol. 1, No. 1 (January 1856) to No. 6 (June 1856), comprising six issues, bound in late 19th century leather. Octavo. Binding near fine, contents near fine with light foxing. Edmund Yates and friends launched the humor magazine The Comic Times in 1855. Though a spritely effort, it failed to catch on. Its greatest distinction today is that it the first national periodical to published the verse of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. When The Comic Times folded at the end of the year, Yates, undaunted, launched another publication, this time a literary monthly called The Train. Dodgson, along with other Comic Times contributors, went along for the ride. It was in The Train that a literary legend made his first appearance. The March issue includes Dodgson s poem Solitude (page 154-55), signed as Lewis Carroll. The pseudonym was a play on his real name: Charles Lutwidge translated into Latin as Carolus Ludovicus . This translated back into English is Carroll Lewis and when reversed makes Lewis Carroll . The pseudonym was chosen by Yates from a list of four submitted by Dodgson, the others being Edgar Cuthwellis, Edgar U. C. Westhill, and Louis Carroll. Another poem by Dodgson also appeared in the March issue, Ye Carpette Knyghte (page 191), but it was unsigned. The May issue includes Carroll s second appearance, a long poem, The Path of Roses (pages 286-88). It would be nearly another ten years before Alice began her adventures in Wonderland, but like his own White Rabbit, Carroll was off and running. Volumes of The Train are surprisingly elusive. This is a particularly handsome example. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers ABE-1547824763314
