American poet James Russell Lowell (1819-1891) wrote this kind letter of 1871 in which he declines an invitation from architect Henry Van Brunt. Lowell writes he has plans to dine with someone else, "otherwise [he] should have been happy to sit at meat with the architects." Lowell is considered one of the Fireside Poets, a popular group of writers from New England in the 1840s whose work was often read aloud by the family fireplace. Other notable poets in the group were: Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, William Cullen Bryant, John Greenleaf Whittier, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. Written on a piece of stationery with a blind-stamped calligraphic "L" that has been folded in half. 7" x 8 7/8".
