American artist Lowell Nesbitt (1933-1993) boldly signed this first day cover that is emblazoned with an image of one of his botanical works, an iris, at the left side, and has four floral stamps based on his paintings at the upper right corner: a rose, camellia, dahlia, and lily. Lowell Blair Nesbitt studied at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University and the Royal Academy of Arts in London. Nesbitt was known for his diversity of technique, creating both abstract and photorealistic art, as well as, for diversity of subject matter. He is credited as the first artist to use computer parts as a subject. Nesbitt's works are included in the collections of several notable institutions including: the Art Institute of Chicago, Corcoran Gallery of Art, MoMA, the National Art Gallery, and the Vatican. The envelope has a circular cancellation from Fort Valley, GA that is dated April 23, 1981. The text along the bottom reads: "Lowell Nesbitt, Designer, Four American Stamps - Issued at Fort Valley, Georgia April 23, 1981". Measures approximately 4 1/2" x 8 7/8".
