Single sheet of ledger paper, 12.5 x 8", with a glue stain to the top edge. _____ A manuscript listing of brands and ear cuts from Gonzales County, Texas, signed by various brand registrants. _____ Of greatest interest are the six signatures of "M. The Clements brothers were cousins of Wes Hardin and Emanuel the father-in-law of Jim Miller. _____ In July 1871 in Indian Territory he killed two trail hands in a dispute over work, and there is little doubt that from time to time other killings might have been credited to him. _____ Clements was jailed at Abilene by Hickok for the Indian Territory slayings, but was released at Hardin's request; in return he once rescued Hardin from the Gonzales jail. _____ He was killed at Ballinger (Texas) by City Marshal Joseph Townsend." --Thrapp p.282 _____ ____ Other names represented are (allowing for 19th c. penmanship): John J. Tumlinson, J.W. Glover, Sam H. Cresap, H.P. Powell, Thos. Caffal, A.D. Grier, A.W. Mills and a few less legible peers. . and the two signatures of "Joe Mangum": _____ "JOSEPH MARION MANGUM. .is one of the stirring, substantial and prosperous farmers and stock-raisers of Rancho, Gonzales County, Texas. _____ He is now the owner of about 2,200 acres of land. _____ He was born in Talapoosa County, Ala., January 31, 1839. emigrated to Texas as early as 1840, settling in Matagorda County. his mother moved [to Gonzales County] when he was fourteen years of age. _____ In 1862 he enlisted in Terry's Rangers, cavalry, and was discharged on account of sickness the same year. _____ After that he served in Duff's Regiment, on the border, until the end of the war. _____ When he returned home he had very little means to start with, but by industry and perseverance he has become one of the prosperous men of his section. _____ He was married in 1876 to Miss Mattie Gillespie." -- History of Texas; Goodspeed Publishing Company; Nashville 1894 p. 377-378.
