Publisher and designer Alexis Hubert Jaillot (1632-1712) produced the Atlas Nouveau Contenant, the first publication to be called an "atlas." This elegant hand-colored and engraved item is the front page of his significant contribution to cartography. The illustrations include the gods Mars and Pallis, Louis the Great King of France, Navarra and Monseigneur le Dauphin on horseback. Atlas (l'Hercule Francois) is holding the world aloft. The bottom illustrates both the Battle at Cassel (1328) and Senef (1674). This beautiful print shows some generalized wear and is missing the point at the top-right corner.
