4 page autograph letter signed by Howells to Charles W. Eliot president of Harvard. Howells responds to Eliot sending him the first volume of his landmark Harvard Universal Classics; and Eliot's John Guilly of Baker Island. Howells also discusses Eliot's 'Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin.' "Hotel Regent, May 13th, 1907. Dear Mr. President: I have read with the pleasure which comes of constant agreement with an author the two books you so kindly sent me. I could not have asked more of you than that you should have dealt more severely with that sin of Franklin's which he was not ashamed of; but I understand the difficulties of being quite frank in such a matter. His not being ashamed was the worst of it; was the evil force of his example; though few of his century were ashamed. Do you remember a paper in the Spectator where a young man speaks of the convention that a young man must have been a sinner and not ashamed, but neither boastful? John Gilly is a masterpiece of quick and useful observations. The conditions we were against such lives now; but still there are many such lives. How much nobler and -- that the lives that fill the newspapers! There is a young girl - I forget her name - who is now teaching a socialist school in the East Side and holding up to the children the swarms of men who have respect of their acquaintances by honest hard work which they still keep to. She will have no heroes, or men who have "risen." I believe she does not inculcate even Lincoln. It is going far but is seems the right direction. I liked much your toast on Religion. Yours sincerely, W.D. Howells. A fine copy of a wonderful association between such learned men. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 000865
