"65 Mt. Vernon Street, Boston, April 20, 1914. Dear Mr. Wilkinson: It seems indeed from my letter of twelve years ago that I had only read the first book of your 'Paul'. My letter of seven years ago merely records my strong impression that I had read the whole poem by that time. I cannot prove that I had, and I am afraid that the book, buried many book boxes deep, is unattainable to my search --- deposit storage in New York. What to do under the circumstances I do not know; but I must lament that I played you false, since that appears to be your impression. I could wish you had not imparted it, the sins of my past which I can make sure of are quite enough for me. But I put my self in your place; I realize your feeling and in a reversed position I can forgive you even while I cannot forgive myself. Yours sincerely, W.D. Howells."
