VAN BUREN, MARTIN. (1782-1862) Eighth President of the United States; Vice President under Andrew Jackson; Secretary of State; Senator; Governor. Autograph Letter Signed ''M. V. Buren'', as Governor of New York. ''Albany, January 17th., 1829''. To former Congressman and soon to be Governor of South Carolina, James Hamilton, Jr. (1786-1857). With original folded envelope, addressed in Van Buren s hand ''To the Honorable James Hamilton Jr / In Congress / Mr. Dudley Washington''. Van Buren s red wax seal affixed to verso, with a one inch light brown circle offset to address portion of envelope, else very fine condition. Van Buren sends a letter of introduction with regard to the future Senator and Van Buren successor, Charles E. Dudley. He writes: ''My dear Major, I am anxious that you should become well acquainted with my friend & successor Mr. Dudley. I am entirely confident that the result will be mutual confidence & esteem. Yours very truly, M.V. Buren / Albany, Jan 17, 1829.'' The War of 1812 awarded Hamilton his rank as Major. A fine and attractive letter. Bestandsnummer des Verkäufers 221643
