Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) signed this White House card in her typical neatly flourished hand. Roosevelt was the First Lady of the United States (1933-1945) during her husband's, Franklin D. Roosevelt, four terms of office as President. She was an outspoken and active First Lady, advocating for civil rights, an expansion of women s roles in the workplace, and the rights of WWII refugees. After her husband s death, Roosevelt remained active in politics, becoming the first U.S. delegate to the United Nations and served as the First Chair of the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women under JFK.
