The Great Wheel was built for the Empire of India Exhibition at Earls Court in 1895. Size of photograph: 6 1/4 x 5 inches. Size of surround: 8 x 6 inches. Sepia coloured. This photograph was a souvenir. Produced by famous commercial printers Waterloo & Sons. The name of the wheel's constructor W. B. Basset is written on the lower right. This signature is likely to be a facsimile however since it looks very like others that I have seen. The wheel was 300 feet high, had 30 carriages with each carriage holding 30 passengers. Basset also constructed the Vienna Riesenrad, which survives to this day. Condition: Near Fine. The photograph is in excellent condition. The surround is slightly foxed.
