A good autograph letter signed by Walter Piston, May 31st 1976. The composer writes to a Mr. Giddy. In part, At the present time you probably understand that for me composing is very difficult and I can t commit myself to anything definite. I have a back-log of requests, and all I can say is I will add yours and let the subconscious work on the idea. He goes on to thank his correspondent s message, which says words of encouragement and appreciation of the heavy emptiness of it all.
