Beschreibung
A poem entitled Hulet Saw-Mill, which discusses both the mill, its owner, and how his estate was argued over after his death by his heirs. The poem itself its set to the tune of "King Solomon" and was written in September 1854 for Hulet Depot. At the top of the poem is a wood cut of a homestead, and there is also an ornamental border. Below is an excerpt of the beginning of the poem: "My fancy took a sudden flight, while I lay on my bed, To the region where old Mashentuck lifts up its sullen head; The passage made me wary. I sat me down to rest Where many a winter rattle snake has made his winter's nest. While there I sat musing upon the lonely hill, My senses were attracted by the sound of Hulet's mill; I looked out to the southward, across the old shrub-plain, I saw the saw-mill tenders all marching in a train. There were a mixed-up multitude, as you may understand, The looked some like the ancient tribes, once in the holy land; They seemed to me like vagabonds while marching o'ver the ground, And not a Priest or Levite among them could be found." A the base of the poem is the line "Printed not a hundred miles from Chepatchet", a town in Rhode Island. However, considering that Rhode Island is only approximately 37 miles by 48 miles, it is unlikely that this broadside was printed in that state. Indeed the OCLC entries list the place of publication as "[Connecticut?]". OCLC 3 (Oct 2019). Measures 15 ½".x 5 ½". Age toning. Separation at folds. General wear.
