Autograph letter signed with the original envelope, postmarked "25 Oct 1982 Frome Somerset". Folded three times, but in very fine condition. The letter itself is written on the author's personal stationary ("from ANTHONY POWELL THE CHANTRY NR. FROME SOMERSET BA11 3LJ (NUNNERY 314)". It reads: "23 October 1982 - Dear Mrs. Lind, - In reply to your letter, I think the simplest thing is for me to write you a letter in my own hand. I don't know why certain letters from you went astray, as we have been living here now for just thirty years. - I have to (??) recollections of Finland, where I spent two Oxford vacations, now nearly sixty years ago, as my father was a staff-officer on the British Military Mission to your country. I do mention those visits in the first volume of my memories Infants of the Spring (1976). - I feel certain there was a Professor Lind (I, by the way, am not a professor), who we used to see. Perhaps he was father or grandfather of your husband's. My impression is that we saw quite a lot of him, as possibly he held these officers in semi-official position. - We used to live in a suite in the Fenneoi(?)
