Beautiful but worn 9x12 inch detailed leather document folder containing scores of pages of school assignments and drawings done by Elizabeth (Bessie) Rummel of Washington DC. Portfolio generally good condition, with expected wear and tear, contents in very good condition. Approximately 150 pieces in all, about 42 of which are artwork. Many signed by Bessie. According to an article published in the Bangor Daily News in July, 1988 Elizabeth Rummel (1891-1989, married name Crosby) was raised in Washington DC, graduated from Juniata College in Pennsylvania, and taught Latin and English for two years before she married. Her husband died in World War II, and she returned to work as a teacher, later becoming a social worker. Encouraged by family and friends, she returned to school at the University of Maine, where she received a Master?s Degree in 1988 at the age of 96. The work in the folder is mostly undated, but appears to trace her progression from kindergarten through sixth or seventh grade (one page dated 1900). There are drawings, handwriting and math practice as well as essays on historical people and events. Several examples of colorful, geometric paper-cutting exercises suggest she may have attended a Froebel kindergarten. Her work overall suggests a keen, active mind and curiosity well suited to a person who would continue their education into their nineties. One of the drawings is interestingly on a page with the letterhead of the United States Military Postal Service, China, Office of the Superintendent.
