A folded sheet of printed stationary, measuring folded: 5 ½ in. x 8 ½ in., watermarked: Hurds. Written and initialed by book collector, Paul Lemperly (1858-1939) to fellow book collector and Rowfant Club member Munson Havens (1874-1942), regarding the English edition of Rudyard Kipling's "Tales of The Trade" (1916). Both men collected Kipling, and there were many Kipling items in the 1940 Parke-Bernet Lemperly sale catalogue. The paper shows some slight age-related tanning, edge wear. "Lynham Lake Avenue Lakewood, Ohio Aug. 22/1916 Dear Munson: Here is description of a Kipling item, perhaps new to you. It will probably, in time, become one of the rarest Kipling first editions. the Trade , as you may know is a title applied to the Submarine Service. Yours; P.L. [Paul Lemperly] Over [next page] Tales of The Trade by Rudyard Kipling. (Nothing else on title-page, but on reverse, the following note). This series of articles written by Mr. Rudyard Kipling at the request of the British Admiralty, first appeared in The Times and other British newspapers, on June 21, June 23, and June 28, 1916, respectively. By permission of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty an edition of twenty-five copies has been privately printed by Clement Shorter for distribution among friends. London: July 9th 1916 .
