Two sheets, 13 x 15.5", folded to form four leaves, and folded to horizontal fourths at some distant point. _____ Entirely in manuscript French, it provides a list of some 214 names of settlers in this Missouri territory, detailing their familial status and the number of arpents of land allowed._____ Most grants are between 200 and 600 arpents, an arpent being approximately .85 acres. _____ The concluding total indicates the distribution of more than 69,000 arpents (approximately 59,000 acres). _____ The document is a series of lists. _____ The first is a list of 60 names of heads of households ("Chef de famille") to whom the concession was granted. _____ This is followed by a list of 14 settlers without families ("habitant sans famille"). _____ These may in fact be married men whose families have not yet joined them, based on the next section. _____ That being 81 names of presumed bachelors ("Jeune homme sans famille"). _____ The next section of 49 names apparently lists additional grants for services rendered ("augmentations a raison de les Services"). _____ The last section of 10 names does not provide any specifics beyond the amount of land granted. _____ Although the document is not dated, an almost identical version appears in print in 24th Congress, 1st Session, HR Doc.59 (page 491) and that is dated January 19, 1803. _____ France owned this land prior to 1763 (when it was ceded to Spain) and from 1800 to October 1803 (Louisiana Purchase.) _____ A list of surnames (allowing for 19th c. penmanship) can be supplied on request. _____ The hinge of the outermost leaf has been repaired with archival tape.
