Octavo (18cm.); reddish-brown limp calf notebook with thumb index issued by the Texas Printing Company; approx. 640pp. filled to completion in black ink with red ink annotations. Leather unevenly darkened either from exposure to damp, internal leaves rather damp stained with bleeding of red ink, oftentimes to the point of illegibility. However, black ink is mostly unaffected and the record remains easy to read throughout. Good to Very Good overall. Contemporary manuscript "A" inked at top and bottom edges of textblock. Complete record of cattle brands kept by the Texas Cattle Raisers Association with manuscript title "No. 5 Series / 1912 First Part / Revised 9-19-1912." The Association was founded in the 19th century to standardize and regulate cattle ownership and the ancient practice of branding for that purpose remains in use to this day. Based on the number of entries per double-page we calculate about 7,000 brands recorded here, including the ear marks, cattle brands, name of the owner, name of the ranch, and the township (or "postoffice" as listed in the notebook).
